[생생 시사영어] - 사회(3): allegation
정부가 북한에 원자력발전소(nuclear power plant)를 지어주려고 했다는 뉴스가 연일 나오고 있다.
증거나 근거가 있는 주장이 아니라면 사실이 아니라 어디까지나 의혹, 의심, 설이라고 해야 맞다.
뉴스에는 특히 우리나라 정치판에는 '아니면 말고 식'의 주장이 난무한다.
그래서 영자신문에도 이에 해당하는 단어가 자주 등장한다.
바로 allegation과 suspicion이다. 이 중에서 오늘은 allegation만 얘기해본다.
allegation은 allege라는 동사의 명사형으로 '뭔가 부정적이고 좋지 못한 일이 있었다라고 주장하다'라는 의미이다.
그러니까 뭔가 벌어졌다라는 확실하지 않은 주장을 펼때 바로 allege라고 하고, 명사로 그런 주장을 allegation이라고 한다. '~설'도 근거가 부족한 소문, 의혹, 의심 등의 의미로 allegation을 넣어서 사용하면 된다.
- 의혹을 제기하다: raise the allegation about/ that ~
- 의혹을 부인하다: deny; dismiss allegation about/ that ~
- 근거없는 의혹: baseless allegation; unfounded allegation; unsubstantiated allegation
- 조작된 의혹: fabricated allegation; false allegation; spurious allegation
- 염문설: allegation of their romantic relationship; alleged romantic relationship; an alleged love affair
- ~라고 하더라~~: It is alleged that
Unification minister denied the allegation that Seoul pushed to build nuke plant in North Korea.
통일부장관은 우리 정부가 북한에 핵발전소 건설을 추진했었다는 의혹에 대해 부인했다.
The alleged romantic relationship turned out to be true.
그 염문설은 사실로 드러났다.
Any university employee or student may report an allegation of or improper sexual, amorous, or romantic relationship to his/her immediate supervisor.
